UCG Moves Towards Protestantism

This is a follow up post on the recent UCG Conferences.  UCG is now rapidly becoming a Protestant Sabbatarian organization like those in this recent article “The Corporate COG Struggle with Law and Grace.”

This article deals specifically with the UCG Doctrinal Statement claiming that God the Father was the God of the Old Testament together with the Being who became flesh as the son.

Council of Elders Statement

The Doctrine Committee and its subcommittees completed review of the paper titled “The God of the Old Testament” submitted by Mark Mickelson. The conclusion reached by the Doctrine Committee was that God the Father and the Word were and are both very active in all of Scripture. The [Mickelson] paper did not receive support to move forward. The Council recommends that everyone read the UCG study paper “The Nature of God and Christ,” to gain additional background on this subject.

They claim that the Mickelson paper did not move forward; is very subtle deceitful double talk, since the UCG Doctrinal Statement actually adopts the gross error of the Mickelson Paper!

This is the same dishonest double talk that these same folks used to pervert the Tkach WCG before they were laid off and formed UCG

This Doctrinal Statement departs from their List of Fundamental Beliefs.

I point out that the issue of the active God of Israel is part of the List of UCG Fundamental Beliefs and this Doctrinal Statement is setting up a change in the thinking of brethren towards a change in that Official Belief.

Once mankind was created, God the Father left the One who later gave up his Godhood to become flesh as the Son, to  care for the man and his wife and their descendants.

God the Father left because mankind sinned, separating humanity from God the Father by their sin and rebellion against the Word of God to do as they decided for themselves instead of living by every Word of God.

The moment that the woman and the man sinned by acting contrary to the Word of God [the tree in the garden was a test of obedience for them, which they failed] that sin separated them from God the Father.

Once mankind was separated from God the Father by their sin; humanity needed a High Priest [a Mediator between humanity and God the Father] to reconcile humanity back to God the Father!

From the very beginning, God knowing that man could sin and would therefore need reconciliation to God, the two Beings who became the Father and the Son, together established the means that such a reconciliation could be effected.

That plan of reconciliation between man and God required the sincere repentance of the sinner, an effective sacrifice for sin, and a commitment by the repentant to stop sinning and to sin no more.   The plan also called for a Mediator or High Priest to reconcile the repentant sinner to God the Father.

When man sinned, humanity was cut off and separated from God the Father by that sin (Is 59:1-2);  yet the Being who became the Son remained with humanity, working to reconcile mankind to God the Father, thereby fulfilling the role of a spiritual High Priest [at that time a High Priest made of spirit].

In that role the Implementing Creator was still spirit, yet he appeared in human form from time to time and spoke with many people over many centuries.  We know that the Creator walked with and taught Adam, Abel and Cain; and was likely seen by Noah and many others. We also know that the Implementing Creator High Priest, then called Melchisedec did visit Abram several times and that Abram had no surprise at seeing him. That was because the Implementing Creator appeared to Abram as Melchizedek on multiple occasions and was well known to Abram.

The function of a High Priest is to reconcile humanity to God the Father, by teaching sincere repentance and instructing people in godliness while offering sacrifices to atone for repented sin.

The physical sacrifices of the Mosaic Covenant were an allegorical type of the spiritual New Covenant, but could not reconcile anyone spiritually to God the Father.

Only the sacrifice of the Implementing Creator himself could reconcile the sincerely repentant to God the Father; for the wages of sin [which is death] must be paid.

Hebrews 7:20 And inasmuch as not without an oath he [Christ] was made [High] priest: 7:21 (For those priests [of Levi] were made without an oath; but this with an oath by him that said unto him, The Lord sware and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec:) 7:22 By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better testament [the High Priest of the New Covenant].

Because the men of Levi died in their generations there was a continual change of high priests; but the High Priesthood of Jesus Christ is eternal; existing from Adam as Melchisedec, right to the present; and the priesthood of Levi actually served the spiritual High Priest, the Husband of Israel, Jesus Christ [Melchisedec].

The Mosaic high priest and priesthood served Mosaic Israel under the spiritual High Priesthood of Melchisedec, therefore the passing of the Mosaic priesthood left the priesthood of Melchisedec as the only remaining priesthood of God!

Melchisedec [Jesus Christ] was the spiritual Husband of Israel that Levi served!  After he gave up his Godhood to become flesh and die for humanity, the Mosaic Marriage Covenant and with it the Aaronic priesthood ended; but with the resurrection of Melchisedec, Jesus Christ [Hebrew:  Yeshua Mashiach], the High Priesthood of Melchisedec between mankind and God the Father was established as an eternal spiritual High Priesthood, Mediating and reconciling all humanity to God the Father on the spiritual level of the New Covenant!

7:23 And they truly were many priests, because they were not suffered to continue by reason of death: 7:24 But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood. 7:25 Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.

7:26 For such an [spiritual] high priest [was suitable to be an eternal High Priest] became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners [without sin and set apart from all sinners], and made higher than the heavens;

Jesus Christ the eternal High Priest offered up himself as the Creator of Humanity made flesh, who being worth more that all humanity and being without any sin; was a perfect sacrifice and need be offered only once to atone for all the sins of all humanity; While the physical sacrifices of animals only served to keep people in the physical Mosaic Covenant and had NO spiritual promises, and animals needed to be killed on a continual basis

7:27 Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people’s: for this he did once [being a perfect sinless sacrifice of the Creator himself], when he offered up himself.

7:28 For the law maketh men high priests which have infirmity; but the word of the oath, which was since the law, maketh the Son, who is consecrated [an eternal spirit High Priest] for evermore.

Both the Mosaic Covenant and the Aaronic priesthood were instructional allegories of the spiritual New Covenant and its spiritual High Priest; who was/is the Creator; and in the Mosaic Covenant and the priesthood of Aaron, they actually served [whenever they were faithful] Jesus Christ as their Husband who came between them and God the Father [which is the role of a High Priest].

The physical high priest acted out the function of a physical mediator between man and God which is the role of Jesus Christ as the ONLY spiritual Mediator and Intercessor between man and God on the spiritual level.

1 Timothy 2:5  For there is one God [the Father], and one mediator between God [the Father] and men, the man Christ Jesus;

The one who became Jesus Christ gave up his Godhood and as a physical man came and gave his life for us, after which he was resurrected back to spirit and returned to God-hood as the ONLY Intercessor between God the Father and humanity.

2:6 Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.

The Function of a Priesthood

The function of a priesthood is to:

  • Mediate between men and God and to
  • Offer sacrifices on behalf of men to God, and to
  • Teach people to live by every Word of God, and to
  • Judge and rebuke all sin and

So reconcile the sincerely repentant to God the Father.

The Priests were to be God’s teachers of godliness to bring people to the righteousness of God, and also to  judge the people (Deuteronomy 17:8-9; 21:5; I Chronicles 23:4; II Chronicles 19:8; Ezekiel 44:15, 24).

Humanity has been cut off from God the Father by our sins.

Isaiah 59:1 Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: 59:2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.

It is very important to study the first six lessons about the Sovereignty of God.

Mankind being separated from God the Father by their sin;  humanity needed a High Priest [A Mediator between humanity and God the Father] to reconcile humanity back to God the Father!

Jesus Christ is the Door (John 10) which controls access to God the Father.  This is because access to God the Father can come ONLY through sincere repentance and the atoning sacrifice of the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ.  Only by the application of the sacrifice of the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ can we be reconciled to and access God the Father.

John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Mankind even Mosaic Israel have been cut off from God the Father since the sin of Adam and Eve, and this fact was demonstrated by the fact of the Veil between the people and the Most Holy Place of God in the Temple, into which the physical high priest could enter only once a year as an analogy that after his resurrection our spirit High Priest has now entered the Most Holy Place to sit at the right hand of the Father and intercedes for those who have been called to God.

Psalm 110:1 The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.

Jesus also saying of God the Father that:

John 1:18 No man hath seen God at any time, the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared [openly revealed] him.

All of you KNOW that I get my doctrine directly from the Holy Scriptures and that I do not blindly follow HWA, yet he did teach the same as I do on this matter; often clearly stating that Jesus revealed the Father.

It is true that the Father’s existence is implied in the scriptures, but he was NEVER actively involved and was not active or known before the physical life of Jesus Christ who revealed the existence of the Father and the Being who became the Son as two separate God Beings.

For years Mark Mickelson has been falsely cloaking himself in the name of Christ and of Herbert Armstrong to teach the Protestant error that God the Father was the God of the Old Testament who was the Lord of Hosts.

This is not the teaching of Herbert Armstrong, it is not my teaching and it is not scriptural;  it is gross error.

Please download at this link and read the “Personal Salvation” and the “Ecclesiastical Authority” books here, for in depth detailed studies on this subject.

For a very long time Mark Mickelson has been teaching the heresy that The Lord of Hosts, and most references to God in the Old Testament refer directly to God the Father as being the active God in dealing with Israel etc. instead of Jesus Christ. This was the premise of his Doctrinal Paper. I have done several posts on Mark and his position

At the recent UCG CoE Conference this statement was released by the Doctrinal Committee

The paper did not receive support to move forward. This is the same dishonest double talk that these same folks used to pervert the Tkach WCG before they were laid off and formed UCG

Mark’s position is very evangelical, presenting the Father as the uncompromising God of the Old Testament, with Christ adding Grace later. In reality Mark has been allowed to openly teach this heresy and his paper was a “Trial Balloon” on the subject.

Many brethren would not agree with the idea and so these same folks who brought this error into the Tkach WCG  came up with a more subtle statement that accepts the evangelical position that God the Father was the God of the Old Testament, but added that Christ was also active then to pacify the brethren.

What this statement does is to promote the evangelical heresy that God the Father was the God of the Old Testament and that he was the God of Moses and the Mosaic Covenant and the laws of Moses.

In due time the other shoe will drop that Jesus brought grace through his sacrifice thereby freeing us from any obligation to keep the laws of Moses. Then the heresy long taught in UCG at ABC and elsewhere that “We keep them because WE want to, not because we have to” will kick in and very many will decide that if they don’t have to, they will simply decide not to.

UCG is now rapidly becoming a Protestant Sabbatarian organization.    Make no mistake, this seemingly innocuous Doctrinal Statement is earth shattering in its implications for UCG!

  1. James you say “Mark’s position is very evangelical, presenting the Father as the uncompromising God of the Old Testament, with Christ adding Grace later. In reality Mark has been allowed to openly teach this heresy and his paper was a “Trial Balloon” on the subject.

Many brethren would not agree with the idea and so these same folks who brought this error into the Tkach WCG came up with a more subtle statement that accepts the evangelical position that God the Father was the God of the Old Testament, but added that Christ was also active then to pacify the brethren.”

Do you even know what Mark Mickelson said in his paper and sermons? His premise was that both God the Father and The Word were intimately involved with humanity since creation. How do you get the evangelical Trinitarian view from that?

Furthermore UCG does not believe that God the Father was the God of the Old Testament. They believe it was exclusively Jesus Christ.

    Please get your facts straight!

Dear friend, I do not take posting this lightly. Yes I have studied Mark’s teachings thoroughly, he takes great pains to insist that “The Lord of Hosts” the God of Israel, was the Father and not the one who became the son. I have also written him personally, and I have been in contact with people on the UCG CoE about the Mickelson Paper.

Further your statement; “Furthermore UCG does not believe that God the Father was the God of the Old Testament. They believe it was exclusively Jesus Christ.”; was true as of end April; the very point of the article being that this Doctrinal Statement departs from their List of Fundamental Beliefs. Which point is confirmed by the Doctrinal Statement itself which is contrary to the UCG list of Fundamental Beliefs.

I point out that the issue of the active God of Israel is part of the list of UCG Fundamental Beliefs and this Doctrinal Statement is setting up a change in the thinking of brethren towards a change in that Official Belief. https://www.ucg.org/bible-study-tools/booklets/fundamental-beliefs-of-the-united-church-of-god/god-the-father-jesus

  2. James, you wrote: “It is true that the Father’s existence is implied in the scriptures, but he was NEVER actively involved and was not active or known before the physical life of Jesus Christ who revealed the existence of the Father and the Being who became the Son as two separate God Beings.”

Within the following verses, is that an example of the Father’s existence being implied in the scriptures?

Deuteronomy 32:39 See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god with me: I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I heal: neither is there any that can deliver out of my hand.

:40 For I lift up my hand to heaven, and say, I live for ever.

Those verses speak of only one Being who lives forever and this Being appears to be very active.

Neither Jesus Christ, nor the Word, could say those words as the Word was made flesh and Jesus Christ was dead for 3 days and 3 nights, which would interrupt the thought of any “live for ever.”

James, to clarify what you are saying a little bit more, perhaps you could provide us with a couple of scriptural examples that show that “the Father’s existence is implied.”

    Thanks,

    John

The most obvious are Genesis; Let US make man in OUR image; implying more than one Creative Being.
Psalm 110:1 The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.

I said “imply” because these comments are very few and they were vague until Christ came to reveal their meaning. Which is why the Jews have a problem with a God family of more than one Being. The point is that the Father left humanity alone and gave Christ the job of saving mankind as His Intercessor. Jesus Christ was Melchisedec and he was the Lord of Hosts the Husband of Israel; NOT God the Father!
There are a few others but I lack time right now. James

  3. James: Since 2010 I followed your articles with attention, although I differ in some things, in others I totally agree always trying to imitate the inhabitants of Berea, (Acts 17:11) “to see if things were like that” ” until reaching all the riches of full understanding “(Colossians 2: 2) I have always been intrigued by some passages like the one quoted by John Gordon (Deuteronomy 32: 9) Another is Isaiah 45: 6-7)” So that it is known from the birth of the sun, and as far as it goes, that there is only me; I am Jehovah, and none more than I,
7 I form the light and create the darkness, I make peace and create adversity. I am Jehovah who do all this. “I have always wondered if the word” Elohim “in Genesis 1: 2 did not refer to angels as implied by Job 38: 7 or EL Psalm 103: 20. In the meantime I will always try to grow in knowledge and ask for understanding until I am convinced in my own mind. regards

The word Elohim means mighty ones and could refer to any great personage including angels, however the passage also says “let us create man in our image” and angels in their natural state have wings and other differences from men with several faces etc. Only the God family has the same image or likeness of humanity, because human beings are embryonic children of God and like all children are in the same general likeness of their parent[s].
