Laodicea and the Nicolaitanes

The post contains extensive quotes from:

Beloved, “Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees.”
by J.H. Allen

Laodicea and the Nicolaitanes

When our Lord Jesus Christ walked among men, He taught His disciples to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, whom He denounced as hypocrites. With them He classed the chief priests and officials of the temple, together with the recognized teachers, (scribes, or “professors” Ferrar Fenton Translation) in the Synagogues.

He declared they had so corrupted the truth of God, which they were supposed to preach, with the doctrines, traditions and ordinances of men, that the truth, as originally given, was no longer with them. That which these blind leaders of the blind were giving forth as truth of God was making their converts twofold more the children of hell than they were. through their acceptance of the traditions taught by these corrupt teachers.

Therefore, as a warning to those who were joining themselves to Him, the Lord said that these non-spiritual men made long prayers for a “pretense,” a public “show” which, while having a form of humility, was for the purpose only of being seen of men.

What these men really loved was to make a big show in the vestments and appearance, being given the highest seats in the Synagogues; the uppermost rooms at the public feasts; the respect and greetings they received in the market places from truly humble and sincere men, whom they hoped would esteem them as superiors, and who addressed them as Rabbi, Rabbi, my master; father, reverend etc;

But our Lord commanded: Mat 23:5 But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments, 6 And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues, 7 And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi. 8 But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren. 9 And call no man your father [for a religious title] upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven. 10 Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ. 11 But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant. 12 And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.

This was a double command for a double purpose: 1) Do not allow men who are your brethren in Christ, and who compose the assembly of God, to call you Master, for ONE alone is your Master. 2) Do not allow yourself to become possessed with such a carnal spirit that you want men who belong to the body of Christ to call you “Master.”

Also, condemned was the carnal desire to be “uppermost” in the eyes of the people, these leaders were charged with extortion and accused of devouring the homes of widows, and of excess. Jesus accused those who aspired to be regarded as dignitaries of the congregations of the Most High God of being hypocrites. Those people doing these things contrary to the direct instructions of Jesus Christ, are rejected by God; as these same people have already rejected Christ in their doings.

It is true that there is a legal and God-approved honor given to certain selected ones:  “We beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you; and to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake. And be at peace among yourselves,” (I Thessalonians 5:12-13).

“Let the elders that rule well [guide; lead; preside in a zealous godly manner] be counted worthy of double honor, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine,” (I Timothy 5:17).

Why guide and lead, instead of rule with rigor?

Because those who are over us in the Lord are shepherds who must lead and guide, but not dominate. Rule is arbitrary government, and the faithful to God, musr be “subject to Christ” only. “One is your Master, even Christ.”

The following Divine instruction is from one of the inspired Spirit-filled elders:
The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed. Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight [not bullying dominating] thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind; Neither as being lords over God’s heritage, but being ensamples to the flock,” (I Peter 5:1-3).

The “blind guides” would say, but not do. The true Divinely-anointed elder will both say and do, and thus be an example to the flock, whom the people will love and esteem very highly for his work’s sake, and who in his heart will never desire to be lord over the heritage of his Master.

What is to be done by a true person of God? He must keep all of the commandments of God with Christ-like zeal.

Romans 6:16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

It is this aspiration on the part of men to become lords over Gods heritage that God hates. “The doctrine of the Nicolaitanes” is just what the word Nicolaitanes itself declares.

Proof: 1) In the book of the Revelation of Jesus Christ, it is both “the deeds” and “the doctrine” of the Nicolaitanes that Christ despises, (Revelation 2:6, 15).

The Lord demands repentance on the part of those who hold and practice these things and He threatens drastic punishment if they do not obey Him:
“Repent; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth,” (Revelation 2:16).

2) The name, Nicolaitanes, is a compound word which is composed of three Greek words, and which, because of being a proper noun, is transferred instead of being translated into English. As thus transferred, it is subject to the laws of Greek construction in regard to ellipsis, contraction and phonetics.

3) The Greek words used in its construction are first: “Nikos,” of which we use the English equivalents instead of the Greek letters, as we shall also of the other two parts.

Nikos is defined as “a conquest; victory; triumph; the conquered; and by implication, dominancy over the defeated.” Another transferred name in which this term is used is “Nicopolis,” i.e., Niko conquest; polis city. Hence, the city of conquest, or city of victory. Also Andro “nikos;” a man of conquest, of victory.

The second term used in the name under consideration is “laos,” meaning people, another use of which is Nicolas, which is transferred and is composed of Nikos-laos and means one who is “victorious over the people,” the letter s being, in both words, the nominative case ending, which is retained only at the end of the word to denote the case, while a short and o short are contracted into a long.

Also, a still further transferred use of “laos” is found in the name Lao(s)diceans, compounded with dike or dice as the Greek k is the equivalent English c. Thus, in the name Laodiceans, we have laos “people” and dice judgment, or vengeance, i.e., the people of my judgment, or of my vengeance; the people who will be judged.

The Greek word la(ic)os means “laymen,” of which la-os is the root and stem, which selfsame word, with the o short contracted to i, to which root and stem the plural definite article ton is joined to form laiton is a Greek phrase meaning “the laity.”

The third and last word entering into the construction of the proper name Nicolaitanes is ton, in which omega, the long o, is contracted into long a, thus making the word “tan,” which is the genitive case plural in all the genders of the definite article the.

Therefore, we have, without the legal Greek construction, the English hyphenated word Nickos-laos-ton, but which, with its lawful elisions and contractions, becomes the English name: Nicolaitanes, the full meaning of which, in its native tongue and in its ecclesiastical setting, is that the bishops and prelates of the Church have gained a triumphal victory or conquest over the laiton; [the laity] until they [the laity] have been compelled to submit to the arbitrary dominion of men which thing which God HATES: They have come between the people and God becoming the “Lords over God’s heritage” in place of the Eternal.

This is the Roman Catholic type of church governance; adopted by many other religious groups!

They have exalted themselves above all that is called god, by presenting themselves as ultimate moral authorities between men and God;’ and above God in the so called absence of Christ.

Saying that you cannot understand God’s word through the gift of God’s spirit and you must follow me as I interpret and bind and loose God’s words. Thus placing themselves between the people and God and by binding and loosing as they see fit, they exalt themselves above the Word of God.

The evidence of this is found in all our common school dictionaries, among which we find the following definition of the term “hierarchy: the power of dominion, government by ecclesiastical rulers,” to which the following is introduced in evidence:

“If anyone shall say that there is not in the Catholic Church a hierarchy established by the divine ordination, consisting of bishops, presbyters and ministers, let him be anathema. Council of Trent (trans) XXIII 6.” (Century Dictionary.)

In other words, let anyone who will have the temerity to say there is not a hierarchy, not a collection of human beings, who have been given the power,  of dominion, as ecclesiastical rulers over churchmen, who are declaredly Gods heritage, let that man be accursed; i.e., let death and hell and the devil get him. Surely, the thing in which that ecclesiastical company and the Church of God groups who have adopted this thing that Christ HATES; are glorying is their shame!

Furthermore, Webster defines the word “Episcopal” as “the power of government, belonging to, or invested in, bishops or prelates. Government of the church by bishops.”  Also “In episcopacy, the order of bishops is superior to the other clergy, and has exclusive power to confer orders.”

In this definition it is affirmed that a certain portion of presbyters (elders) were even “in apostolic times superior in authority to ordinary brethren,” and also mentions the fact that episcopacy recognizes “Episcopal rank” which is created by the institution thus governed; all of which affirms that any church in which Episcopal government obtains; is practicing the very carnal and fleshly iniquity of creating “Ranks of authorities between the people and God” in what should be a holy brotherhood. The use of this appellation makes “inferiors” out of “brethren” who are in the selfsame called out priesthood.

The approbation of “ordinary elders” demands a “set” of elders who are super-ordinary, thus creating “rank” (caste) in the otherwise divine brotherhood, all of which destroys holy fellowship, creates division and strife, and fosters envy.

No marvel that our Lord should hate a thing like that, condemn it, and demand that those who are guilty shall repent.

There is no religious authority whatsoever in any man; It is the Word of God that has authority!

And when the Word of God is faithfully taught, that Word carries the authority of the true Holy Father in heaven. On the other hand; if any man turns God’s Word and does not teach it; that man is an apostate and has no authority whatsoever for he has forsaken the authority of God’s Word.

But will they repent?

Yes, some will when the tribulation is upon them. Others, however, will stick to their position of coming between the brethren and God, vainly imagining that their boasted “superiority” will carry them through that time of the greatest trouble the world has ever known, or will know. They must go down with the rest of the hosts of anti-Christ.

Anyone who exalts himself above God by claiming the right to bind or loose God’s Word is an Antichrist and will be destroyed by God in due time.

Regardless of all the miracles that he does or his fine arguments; the coming final false prophet, called an abomination in scripture, for exalting himself above Almighty God and his Word; shall be destroyed at the coming of Christ, precisely 1,335 days after this Pope is set up doing miracles in Rome.

And yet, one of the most unfortunate features of all this is that there are those in the Christian Church who do not actually knowingly teach the doctrine of the Nicolaitanes, and yet still practice “their deeds” of dominating the laity by lording it over the laity, which should be subject only to one Divine Master.

It is often true that these have assumed this lordship because they are esteemed very highly in love for their works sake, but have become vainly puffed up in their fleshly mind.

In the Revelation; Jesus Christ commends the Church at Ephesus for: But this thou hast, that thou hatest the deeds of the Nicolaitanes, which I also hate. Rev 2:6

Christ then tells the church at Pergamos that: So hast thou also them that hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitanes, which thing I hate. 16 Repent; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will fight against them [who hold this doctrine] with the sword of my mouth [the Word of God], Rev 2:15.

Since Jesus Christ hates both the doctrine and deeds of the Nicolaitanes; we should, as followers of Christ; also HATE these deeds and doctrine. Therefore it is absolutely imperative that we learn what these deeds and doctrine are; lest we also be hated by Christ and lest he fight against us.

The fruit of this doctrine is a dictatorial, oligarchic, hierarchical system; that exalts a caste of priests or ministers above the people; which then comes between the people and their God: Finally being seen as God’s representative and therefore looked up as a God themselves; with the right to change God’s Word, thereby actually replacing God as the ultimate moral authority in the minds and lives of the people.

The people then follow this hierarchical leadership without question; focusing on these men instead of upon God and his Word. The people are then guilty of idolatry and spiritual adultery; and must be corrected by Almighty God; destroying the flesh, in the hope that some will repent, so that the spirit might be saved.

This system and the men who use it, use God’s name to exalt itself [themselves] over the people; even as it also exalts itself over God. The word “doctrine” of the Nicolaitanes; refers to the “Primacy of Peter” teaching which exalts men as judges over God’s Word: while the word “deeds”; refers to the actual act of exalting oneself between the people and God’s Word [this act can still be done even without actual knowledge of the doctrine].

A simple statement like: The Sabbath should be kept holy, but we will keep Sunday holy instead and justify that by calling Sunday the Sabbath of God; which scripturally it is not.

The seventh day is holy and this same seventh day was kept by Jesus Christ and all the Jews as well as by all true Christians throughout history. Please see our posts on Christian History and the Biblical Sabbath.

Brethren this issue is crucial to your spiritual safety. If you follow men in rejecting God’s Word, for their teachings and traditions contrary to the Word of God; then Jesus Christ is going to fight against you; he is going to CORRECT you.

That is the condition at the end of this age. That is what Catholicism, Laodicea and all false religions are all about. they are about following men and losing the zealous love for our heavenly Father and his commandments: Becoming lukewarm toward God [loving and being zealous for a man or a corporation above our zeal for God’s commandments].

We say, we love God; yes indeed.  But we obey and follow men instead of God’s Word!

Think not? Then ask your priest of minister about the Biblical Sabbath, or about their position on the Biblical Holy Days and the pagan festivals like Easter and Christmas and the Primacy of Peter doctrine; which is the doctrine of the Nicolaitanes. Today’s religions are man centered and we are NOT: totally God centered like we should be!

Men ought not exalt themselves above God!

The Papacy and all religions which do not keep all of God’s commandments with diligent enthusiastic zeal do this as well; by knowingly or unknowingly using the very same Primacy of Peter doctrine of the Nicolaitanes and exalting men as ultimate moral authorities of humanity.

When a man becomes our final moral authority we have exalted him above God in our own minds and this is the sin of idolatry. When a man or group of men tells you to believe the Word of God as THEY explain it: instead of telling you to believe what they say as proved by the Word of God: It is time to move on. God comes FIRST!

When a man deliberately exalts himself; HE SHALL BE ABASED BY ALMIGHTY GOD. This Doctrine replaces God with a man as the ultimate moral authority; in the minds and lives of the people.

Mat 23:11 But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant. 12 And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.

The Primacy of Peter Heresy

If some man were to say, follow me for I am greater than God and I know better than God. He will give very few followers; very very few people would think that he was a sane and intelligent man.

Yet, large number of such people have been going around for hundreds of years; attracting hundreds of millions of followers. How can this be? Who would follow such a man?

It is because they are subtle and distort scriptures to deceive. And a person not grounded in the scriptures, not grounded in sound doctrines, simple cannot understand what is going on. These things simply can’t be discerned by anyone who is not grounded in the Holy Scriptures, and does not enthusiastically keep all of the commandments of God.

The primary scriptures used to deceive people is found in Matthew 16, where it is written Jesus says: “I say unto you that you are Peter and upon this rock I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail again it. And I will give the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven and whatever thou shalt bind on earth it shall be bound in heaven and whatsoever thou shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”

These people say: Peter was given power to sit in judgment of God’s words, to bind whatever he chose to bind; and to loose whatever he choses. They say that Peter was given the authority to decide for himself; which of God’s commandments he was willing to obey, and to enforce and to teach. And which of God’s commandment he could decide he did not want to support or obey or accept or teach.

They say that, Jesus Christ exulted Peter above God’s word, setting him up in judgment of God’s word, and giving him the authority to decide whether he thought God was right or wrong. In doing this, Jesus Christ made Peter sovereign and God his servant.

Is this true? For Jesus to exalt anyone over the Father, Jesus would have to be in authority over the Father himself!  Was Jesus Christ really in authority over his own Father contrary to scripture? Did jesus have the authority to set up men over God the Father, when Jesus himself said “I can do nothing without my Father? I have done the will of my Father. I have kept my Father’s commandments.”

Jesus said when you pray; pray to the Father, thy will be done. Whose will,? the Father’s will! We are to pray Thy will be done which means that we must want that to happen. We must want to do his will. Why then would men be given the authority to change God’s word? to change God’s will at their own personal discretion?

Does Peter really have that authority and do his heirs and descendants ecclesiastically really have such authority over the father and God’s Word? Or is this a misreading of the scriptures? Is it a twisting of the words of God?

The Roman Catholic Church claims that Peter was the first pope, the successor of Christ. They say he is therefore Christ’s vicar and the visible and infallible head of the church, having power and authority over all the other apostles and the entire church. Catholic leaders also claim that Christ built His church upon Peter and gave him the keys to unlock and close the kingdom of heaven and hell to anyone as he chose. They assert that the popes in past history up to the present are Peter’s successors, and have the same power of the keys.

These far‑reaching claims are based on the verses found in Matthew 16:18-19. Let us make a careful and critical examination of these verses and see what Jesus said and what He actually meant. Here is the text: “Thou art Peter, and upon this Rock I will build My church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”

The New Testament was originally written in the Greek, from which the Latin, English, and other versions were translated.

If you study the Greek text you will find that the word Peter and the word Rock on which Christ was to build His church are two separate and distinct words, each having a different meaning. The word Peter in Greek is petros, which means “a piece of rock; a stone; a single stone; movable, insecure, shifting, or rolling.” The word rock is petra, which means “a rock; a cliff; a projecting rock; mother rock; huge mass; solid formation; fixed; immovable; enduring.”

The word petros for Peter in the Greek is in the masculine gender and the word petra for the rock is in the feminine gender. Petros and petra are two distinct words in the Greek. Petros is a shifting, rolling, or insecure stone, while petra is a solid, immovable rock. In the English language the gender is not specified by the article. We say the fork, the spoon, and the knife. The three words have the same article. In the Greek, as in many of the modern languages, each noun and corresponding article is in the masculine, feminine, or neuter gender. In many cases it is an arbitrary arrangement, regardless of sex.

The article in Greek is important. If one noun is in the masculine it must have a masculine article, and if it is in the feminine it must have a feminine article. The text under consideration in the Greek shows that petros is in the masculine, and petra in the feminine, proving that they are two distinct words; and each one has a different meaning. Now the question is, on which of the two, petros or petra, did Christ establish His church? Was it on petros, a movable stone, or petra, an immovable rock?

Let us quote the text again: “I say also unto thee [to Peter], That thou art Peter [petros, masculine gender], and upon this Rock [petra, feminine gender] I will build My church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it” (Matt. 16:18). The text indicates clearly that the church of Christ is built on petra  [Christ] and not on Petros [Peter or any man].

Now, who is this petra or rock on which Christ built His true church?

Let the Holy Bible again give the answer. If the Bible gives the answer, we make no mistake in accepting it because the definition is authentic. Here is the Roman Catholic’s own Douay version “They drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock [petra, in the Greek] was Christ” (1 Corinthians 10:4).

Here we have evidence that petra refers to Christ, and not to Peter, petros. Again we quote: “Jesus Christ Himself being the chief Cornerstone”  (Ephesians 2:20) “He is the Rock, His work is perfect” (Deuteronomy 32:4; 2 Samuel 22:2-3) (Douay [Catholic version] , 2 Kings 22:2-3).

Long before Jesus was born He was considered the Rock. Isaiah declares: “Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation” (Isaiah 28:16). Peter applies this prophecy to Christ. He wrote: “Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief Cornerstone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on Him shall not be confounded” (1 Peter 2:6). David said: “Lead me to the Rock that is higher than I” (Psalm 61:2) (Douay version, Psalm 60:3).

If the church was built on Peter, then Peter would be the head of the church.

However, Peter was not the head of the church in his day. Instead of having the disciples, apostles, and other believers call Peter pope, or Father Peter, or Holy Father Peter, Jesus said: “Be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren. And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven….

If Jesus delegated Peter to be the head of the church, why did the other disciples quarrel among themselves as to who would be the greatest (Luke 9:46)?

If this decision had already been made by Christ, why should the others fret about it? The other disciples would have submitted to the wish of their Master. Thus it seems evident that no such appointment had been made by Jesus.

Neither Peter nor any of his successors were heads of the true church. Paul explains this when he says: “The head of every man is Christ” (1 Cor. 11:3). God “gave Him to be the head over all things to the church” (Ephesians 1:22).

This explains that Jesus is the head of every person and also of the church. We are responsible to the head, which is Christ, and not to any man who tries to circumvent the work of Christ and take His place. Christ is the head of every person, and we are personallyresponsible to Him as individuals.

Jesus Christ was the Petra; the cornerstone of our salvation, and Peter was a petros, a small pebble and helper; sent forth to teach all things that Christ has taught and commanded:  Not to change, but to teach the words and law of God, Mat 28:20; just like all the other Called Out human beings

Read in Matthew 18:15 where he said:  Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother.

16 But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.

17 And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican.

18 Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

What is he talking about here? Is he not talking about sitting in judgment of disputes and the responsibility of the Church to properly apply the word of God to such disputes? For he goes on to say: Again I say to you that if two or three of you shall agree on earth as touching anything that you shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in Heaven for where ever two or three gathered together in my name there am I in them in the midst of them.

This friends, is talking about the responsibility of the Church, to be faithful and loyal to God’s words and to make binding decision based upon God’s word.

For Christ commanded: Mat 19:17 And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?
17 And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments

Jesus Christ was not conferring upon Peter any kind of authority to change God’s word. To change God’s law; to bind, or loose, or sit in judgment of the will and the word of the Almighty God!

Jesus Christ was informing Peter that his authority was to properly apply God’s word in all physical disputes. That is the limit of the authority of Peter and of the Church. When we have disputes we should try our best to resolve them and if we cannot do so, we can appeal to the Church for a decision which MUST be based upon God’s word.

Was Jesus saying anything new here? Of course not! He was merely quoting the law given to Moses.

For it is written in Deuteronomy 17:8 “If there arise a matter too difficult for you in judgment between blood and blood, and plea and plea and between stroke and stroke, being a matter of controversy within your gates then shall you go to the place which the Lord thy God shall choose and there shall ye come in to the priests to the Levites and unto the judges that shall be in on those days and inquire and they shall show thee sentences of judgments and you shall do according to the sentence which they shall show thee and you shall observe according to all that they inform thee according to the sentence of the law which they shall teach thee and according to the judgment which they shall tell thee; you shall do.

You shall not decline from the sentence which they shall show thee to the right hand nor to the left. And the man that will do presumptuously and will not obey the priest that is there to minister [to serve God and to teach and judge by HIS Word] before the Lord thy God, or unto the judge; even that man shall die; and you shall put away the evil from the land and all the people shall hear and fear and do no more presumptuously.”

There is authority in the ministry and in the priesthood is ONLY to make decisions BASED UPON GOD’S LAW!

There is NO authority to depart from the teachings and commandments of God!

Their authority and power is to teach, enforce and set an example by keeping the word of God, to teach all nations about the things of God.

Mat 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. 19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Popes and priests no matter their beliefs have no authority to deviate from the word of God.

For it is written in Deuteronomy 13; “If there arise among your prophet or dreamer of dreams and give the a sign or a wonder and if the sign or wonder come to pass of which he has spoken and says go up after other gods which ye have not known and serve them, thou shall not harken unto the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams, for the Lord of God does test you to prove you; to know whether you love the Lord of God with all your heart and with all your soul. You shall walk after the Lord of God and fear Him and keep His commandments and obey His voice and you shall serve Him and cleave unto Him. And that prophet or the dreamer of dream shall be put to death because he has spoken to turn you away from the Lord of God that brought you out of the house of bondage.”

It is the Eternal God who is sovereign; not man! It is the Eternal’s will that we are to perform; not men’s will!  It is the Eternal God that we are to obey and His words, not men’s words! No man has the right to change God’s word, to bind or loose God’s commandments.!

No men can exalt himself above the Great Majesty on High who has created the universe, who can hold the world in the hollow of His hands. And before whom a man, any man is a mere speck of dust in comparison, man is nothing he has neither the wisdom, nor the understanding, nor the knowledge, nor the ability, nor the right, nor the power to sit in judgment of God’s word and decide for himself what commandment men should or should not obey.

So, what then did Jesus really say to Peter in Matthew 16? He said: “Caiaphas, you are Peter, a petros, a pebble, a tiny stone; but it is upon this rock; that rock being Jesus Christ himself, the chief cornerstone, the foundation stone; that I will build my Church and you must bind and loose according to God’s law in heaven. You must settle all disputes and make all decisions based upon God’s commandments.

The foundation of the Church is the Rock, Jesus Christ, not the pebble Peter, not the pebble some other man who claims to be an heir of Peter. No man has the right to exult himself of above God. No man should be looked to as ultimate moral authority.

Eph 2:19 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners [from God, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God; 20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets [the Word of God], Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; 21 In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: 22 In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

We become a Temple of God’s spirit ONLY by building our lives upon the foundation of God’s Word and the commandments of God; not by following mere mortals as they change and pervert the Word of God.

All men whether they be Popes, or prophets, or apostles, or ministers, or evangelists, or priests, or whoever they claim to be, MUST be tested according to God’s word.

1 Thess 5:21 Prove all things [by God’s Word]; hold fast that which is good.
22 Abstain from all appearance of evil.

As Paul said, “Follow me even as I follow Jesus Christ.” We are to follow God and Jesus Christ and keep the commandments and do God’s will regardless of what any man says.

1 Cor 11 Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.

No man, no one has any power whatsoever to change as much as a punctuation mark in the Law of God for it is written in Matthew 5:17, “Think not that I come to destroy the law or the prophets I am not come to destroy but to fulfill [to keep]; for truly I say unto you, that until Heaven and Earth should pass away one jot, or one title, or one punctuation mark; shall in no wise pass from the law till all be fulfilled [kept by all; peoples].

As long as the Heavens and the Earth exist; all the commandments, all the law; must be obeyed. No man can ever change any part of the teachings and commandments of Holy Scripture.

Verses 19: Whosoever shall break one of these least commandments and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least to the Kingdom of Heaven; [and I personally say to you; only if you repent will you even be in God’s kingdom].

But whosoever shall do and teach the least of the commandments, the same shall be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven. For I say to you, except your righteousness should exceed the righteousness of the priests, the scribes and the Pharisees you shall in no wise enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.”

Indeed we were told in Daniel 7:25 That the great evil doers shall speak great words against the most high and shall think to change times and laws.

It is wickedness to change “Times” away from God’s Biblical Calendar that teaches us when to observe his High Days and Festivals

It is the son of wickedness that seeks to change the law of God, that seeks authority to decide for himself which laws he will obey and which laws should not be obeyed.

Remember how in the Garden of Eden the serpent beguiled Eve telling her she should decide for herself what is right and what is wrong. And in so doing, would become a God.

Man has been trying to do this ever since, to decide for himself what is right and wrong. To shove God’s word aside. Men do not have the wisdom, or the right; to change the law of their Creator. The Eternal is God; not man. The Eternal is sovereign; not man. The eternal law is His word.

God’s Law, His will; should be obeyed, for He is our Father; and the basic Ten Commandments tell us Honor thy Father and thy Mother that they life may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth. If you want a long life, if you want to live, you must obey God and keep his commandments for only those who keep the Commandments of God shall have access to the tree of life, shall have the right to eternal life.

Those who wanted to sit in the judgment of God’s word, who want to decide for themselves which of God’s commandments they should obey or bind. Or which of God’s commandments they may loose or reject. Those people shall not be in the resurrection; and shall not be in the Kingdom of God; they shall not be part of the first fruits.

Rev 22:14 They shall have their part in the lake of fire; if they do not repent; and those who follow such people shall join them there.”

Do not follow such people, follow God and Jesus Christ. Keep God’s commandments, all of them and follow men ONLY as they followed Christ. Only as they keep the commandments. Always put God and His Commandments first in all things: ALWAYS.

A final Pope is soon to arise doing impressive miracles and claiming the power to bind and loose God’s Word, making himself a god unto himself and exalting himself above all that is called god by replacing the word’s of all god’s with his own teachings and moral leadership.

He shall sit in his temple in the Vatican and present himself as the ultimate moral authority to whom all men should look; so that he appears as a god sitting in the temple of a god. Teaching that all religions are but paths to the same god, he shall deceive all religions except the called out of the Father.

2 Thess 2:3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; 4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

This abomination shall have a maximum of 1,335 days in his position before he is destroyed by Jesus Christ at his coming.

Dan 12:11 And from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days.  12 Blessed is he that waiteth, and cometh to the thousand three hundred and five and thirty days. 13 But go thou thy way till the end be: for thou shalt rest, and stand in thy lot [receive your position of responsibility] at the end of the days.

Rev 19:20 And the beast [the ruler of the New Europe called Babylon in scripture] was taken, and with him the false prophet [the miracle working Pope] that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. By Jesus Christ at his coming.

The signs and symptoms of the Nicolaitane type of behavior.

1. The Primacy of Peter heresy which exalts a Pope or any leader above the Word of God and any immoderate respect or love given to a physical human beings or religious organization. “Minister X says it is all right to do this,” or “the church says it’s okay even if the scripture says different, that the scripture was only for the Jews, or for others and not us”, or “I love the church so much, I would do anything for it”. This is idolizing men and the group. WE MUST do as God’s word commands regardless of what some man says. To do otherwise is to exalt a man over God.

2. Allowing a minister to dominate and abuse you into losing your zeal for God’s commandments; and allowing him to coerce you into giving offerings or tithes; beyond your means. II Corinthians 11:19-20.

3. Stating “God will take care of the problems in church leadership, and will correct them if they are wrong. You should sit back and do nothing; it isn’t your place to question church leaders.”

Remember that God always uses other men to correct those who have gone astray and that God calls his people OUT of slavery to men.

Remember Egypt? Remember Sodom? Who are the heroes of the Bible? Are they not the men and women who dared to stand up and be counted? Are they not the people who dared to stand on the Word of God? The people who dared to take a stand against tyranny and sin? Who dared to stand alone if necessary?

Dare to be like Daniel and stand on God’s Word and your light will shine brightly forever: follow the crowd, fearing men more than God; and your light will be snuffed out.

4. Approving of sins in the church and its leadership, but saying and doing nothing about it.

If you know that pointing out sin will get you kicked out; it is time to leave; for an unrepentant group will eventually be corrected by Almighty God and if you remain among them, or even desire to remain; you will be corrected with them.

Where can you go?

Go to the ROCK of your salvation: seek him out: he is the one who will deliver you! Then begin to fellowship with others who are also standing on the TRUE FOUNDATION. Fellowship with them, but do not exalt that fellowship above God; so that you would be willing to compromise with God’s Word: to maintain such fellowship!

5. Those who Believe that all who leave a particular organization or corporation; are consigned to hell-fire because they are leaving “God’s church” have been deceived into believing a LIE!.

A man or organization is only “God’s church” if they are doing what God commands!

If they are keeping all of God’s commandments without subjugating God’s Word to the philosophies and traditions of men then they are the faithful of God!

Thinking that a corporation can separate us from the love of God; exalts that corporation above God in our eyes.

NOTHING AND NO ONE stands between us and our God, except our own rebellion and sins. There is ONLY ONE MEDIATOR between man and God: our High Priest, Jesus Christ.

6. Some minister LIE syaing, “I will lead you into the Kingdom of God.”

It is only by following God the Father and his Christ that we may enter God’s Kingdom. Not by following any man!

7. Accepting church doctrines and teachings without Biblical proof, and/or accepting doctrinal changes without serious study and questioning.
Not loving God and his Word enough to prove all things 1 Thes 5:21. And conversely, rejecting new biblical truth for past traditions and errors.

8. Fearing to openly disagree with church teachings. Fearing men more than God.

9. Keeping quiet so you can maintain fellowship, all the while knowing things are wrong.

If you are setting a wrong example by tolerating sin; how can that really help anyone? You can set the right example by fleeing the spiritual adultery of putting men and corporations between yourself and the love of God. The RIGHT example is set by doing the RIGHT thing; which is to avoid the unclean thing [sinful man or organization].

Paul tells us to mark [take note of] and avoid those who act contrary to the sound doctrine of the Scriptures, Romans 16:17. By continuing to associate with unrepentant Groups acting contrary to God’s ways, we are ourselves; breaking the Scriptures.

10. The giving of incentives to those who are wavering, so as to keep them from leaving.

If your church bribes people with social niceties, to keep them from leaving; that is wrong. Today this is most often done by compromising with doctrine to make things even easier on the people; such as watering down the practical applications of God’s commandments.

11. The leader, minister or member who knows it all, and won’t listen to God’s Word or keep God’s commandments, is unteachable, an idol to himself.

When a person or group knows it all and is no longer willing to continue diligently searching out the truth of God, they have become self righteous and full of themselves. If they say that anything not discovered by themselves is not important; because if it were important, God would have shown it to them first; their attitude is vain and puffed up with self importance. Such people and Groups are Laodiceans; and they are Nicolaitanes, because they think that they are better than the rest of God’s children, having the right to dominate and control others.

12. Sermons geared to getting people to “support the Work,” “stay in the body,” “don’t leave the flock,” and a failure to focus people solely on God and not on a church or man etc; indicate an apostasy from Christ.

Elders are to  teach biblical spiritual principles, zeal for the whole word for God and sound doctrine; and are to reveal the true things of God while encouraging everyone in the enthusiastic keeping of all of God’s commandments, and diligently setting an example of practicing what they teach!

2 Ti 4   I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering and doctrine.

13. A church where one single head minister has absolute control, coming between the people and God, the Primacy of Peter heresy, or any hierarchical, authoritarian Nicolaitane system.

14. A church that insists that it is necessary to believe the Bible as some man explains it, rather than believe what some man says, as proved from the Bible.

15. A religious group which imposes, directly or indirectly, its own ideas of manners, customs, dress, and tastes upon its followers, as opposed to a group which emphasizes clear Biblical principles and not such peripheral issues.

Such as; a church that teaches that it is wrong for men to wear colored dress shirts to services, insists on wearing a tie, or segregates its members by race or sex, or interferes in where people live or work, etc.

16. A church where “Bible Study” consists of reading church literature and looking up the scripture provided by the literature or minister; instead of searching ALL the scriptures and proving all things.

To study to “prove” preconceived notions is not seeking after God’s truth; it is seeking after support for our own pet ideas.

17. A church where the ministry object to honest and sincere questions concerning doctrine, or the actions of the minister and the corporation. If they were above reproach; why get incensed over sincere questions? That attitude betrays; shame, cognizance of guilt and something to hide.

18. A church that secretly disfellowships people without an explanation to the other members; or a fair and impartial investigation and hearing. Justice should be seen to be done; and not done in secret! Only injustice seeks a place to hide!

COMMENT: If you see many of these symptoms in your group of fellowship, beware!  Flee idolatry before it is too late. God will fight against the doctrine and deeds of the Nicolaitanes and correct them. If you cleave to these groups; you will also be corrected along with them.

How is it that the doctrine and deeds of the Nicolaitanes are mentioned in regard to Ephesus and Pergamos and not mentioned in the message to Laodicea?

They are mentioned in the message to Laodicea; not by name but by description! The Laodicean thinks that he is rich [spiritually] and has need of nothing. No one can tell him anything, he is totally self righteous and wrapped up in himself and his group. He thinks he is better than others! Therefore he wants to dominate, even his own brethren!

Brethren, there is absolutely nothing wrong with corporations and organizations. It is when they begin to focus on themselves or their leaders and turn away from focusing on God that a problem enters in.

These organizations should be always subservient to God and always be focusing the people on God; and NEVER on themselves. When they start to dominate and control the people, making merchandise of God’s sheep and exalting themselves; they have gone astray. When they compromise with God’s Word and claim they have a right to change God’s Word: it is time to leave.

  1. I love your article on Nico (conquer) + laity (people). I too was in the WCG for long enough to experience the hatred and arrogance the ministry have for anyone who chooses to use his own mind to read his own Bible to determine Scripture. HWA said to me, “Why don’t you obey me?” I said, “I’m a Christian. I obey the Bible.” He said, “You won’t get a job in this ministry.” I told him that he was teaching “Blind obedience idolatry” and that the Bible says “Call no man on earth your master, for you have one master who is in heaven, and you are all brethren.”

I suggest that you visit our Biblical Studies site [link fixed 26-7-18] for hundreds of doctrinal studies and articles through the entire Bible. On Friday I am beginning a series through Genesis.
